Piano Myths

Pianos can seem like mysterious instruments. With so many moving parts hidden from view, and sound produced through a complex blend of wood, wool, and machinery, it’s no wonder that myths about pianos have developed over time. Let’s debunk a few of these myths that you may have heard before.

MYTH: Pianos only go out of tune if you play them.
FACT: All pianos go out of tune, whether you play them or not.

While heavy playing can knock a piano out of tune, the biggest culprit is simple entropy: the tension of the strings won’t hold forever. Add to this the environmental impacts of temperature and humidity, and you’ll find that playing is often a small contributor to a piano’s tuning issues. That’s why even lightly played instruments should get regular tune-ups to prevent them from drifting wildly out of tune over time. Keeping up with tuning ensures your piano always sounds its best—whenever you play it.

MYTH: A jar of water will protect your piano in the winter.
FACT: A jar does little to help a piano.

The logic behind this myth is simple: winter’s dry air can harm your piano, so why not add some water to the environment? The problem is that a jar of water evaporates too slowly to make any meaningful difference. What it will do, however, is become an extra item to rattle around inside the piano and get forgotten over the years.

A much better solution is a Piano Life Saver System, which adds moisture in a controlled and efficient way. It’s a proactive measure that ensures your piano stays protected against the harsh winter conditions.

MYTH: It doesn’t matter who you buy your piano from.
FACT: It absolutely matters who you buy your piano from.

While we can’t resist a little self-promotion, we’ll say this: buying a piano is a big investment, and the right dealer makes all the difference.
